Chicken fajitas are always a part of our Taco Tuesday table. Living in Texas, fajitas have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mom used to make them for us when I was a girl, then when I got older, I always made them for my own family!
And now, I have to tell you, fajitas in the air fryer are even better! The chicken is always tender, and the vegetables are always just right – not too soft and not too crispy.
Air fryer fajita chicken combines tender chicken breast strips with classic fajita peppers and onions and served up in warm flour tortillas! Every bite explodes with flavor, and the big bonus is that you won’t have to spend a ton of time in the kitchen to air fry chicken fajitas.

- Great Flavor. The chicken is seasoned well and cooks up tender and juicy, and the veggies are the perfect texture.

Ingredients
It only takes a few simple ingredients to make these air fry fajita chicken. You’ll find them all easily at your local grocery store.
- Chicken breasts: I prefer using boneless, skinless chicken breasts but thighs work just as well.
- Fajita vegetables: I stick with the classic combination of onion, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper. Feel free to use any color combination of peppers for more color!
- Seasoning: I love making my own quick fajita seasoning mixture using common ingredients. Garlic salt, black pepper, cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder add the traditional fajita flavors you crave. A bit of Slap Ya Mama seasoning adds a bit of heat and we love adding a bit in as well. You can also make your own fajita seasoning or taco seasoning for the chicken or even use a store-bought option.
- Olive oil: Just a bit to aid in cooking.
- Flour tortillas: Use fajita size so there’s plenty of room to pile it on! You can also use corn tortillas or gluten-free tortillas if you want.
Be sure to check the full ingredient list with quantities of each item in the recipe card further down the page.
Variations
- Spicy Flavors. For even more kick, add some red pepper flakes or chopped chipotle chilies to the seasoning mixture. You can also slice up some jalapenos and cook them with the onions and peppers.
- Swap the Chicken: This recipe works great with pork and beef too! Sliced flank steak and pork loin will work as an easy swap with this same recipe. Just be sure to adjust the cooking time appropriately.
- Add Beans: Add some black beans to the veggie mixture for more flavor and to boost the fiber and protein.

How to Make Chicken Fajitas in the Air Fryer
Making this recipe is as easy – or even easier – than gathering up the ingredients. It only takes a few simple steps.
- Step 1: Prep the Chicken and Veggies. Slice the chicken into strips and add them to a large mixing bowl with the sliced onion and pepper strips.
- Step 2: Season. Whisk the seasonings together in a small mixing bowl and add them to the bowl with the chicken and onions. Pour the olive into the bowl and toss to coat everything in the oil and spices.
- Step 3: Air Fry. Place a piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the air fryer basket and add the chicken fajita mixture on top. Air fry for 15 minutes at 390ยฐ F, stopping to toss the chicken and vegetables halfway through the cooking time.
- Step 4: Assemble the Fajitas. Heat the flour tortillas in a pan, fill with the chicken fajita mixture, top with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!
Favorite Fajita Toppings
One of my favorite parts of making fajitas is having plenty of toppings on hand for everyone to choose from. There are so many toppings that taste so great on them. Some excellent options include:
- Classic Toppings: Shredded cheese, homemade guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo are the most popular additions.
- Sauce: Tomato salsa, habanero salsa, or even a green salsa are classic options but you might also try picante sauce or taco sauce.
- Simple: Opt for sliced avocados, chopped cilantro, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
- Beans: Serve up your favorite refried beans, black beans, or even charro beans as a side dish or topping.
Serving Suggestions
Just like toppings, there are a ton of great choices when it comes to sides that you can serve with chicken fajitas.
- A simple grain dish like Mexican rice or Spanish rice, black beans and rice, or Mexican quinoa go great.
- Serve with Mexican street corn, corn salad, hot corn dip, or green chile corn casserole.
- We love along with a few appetizers like chips with guacamole and salsa, avocado egg rolls, and steak nachos.

Expert Tips
- Easy Cleanup. Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper to make cleanup a breeze.
- Be Sure to Preheat. Always preheat your air fryer. It’s a myth that air fryers don’t have to be preheated. If you don’t have the option to preheat I recommend allowing the air fryer to run for five minutes before adding the chicken.
- Slice Evenly. Cut your chicken strips and veggies uniformly for even cooking.
- Cook in Batches. Try to keep the chicken and veggies in a somewhat single layer. If you are using a smaller air fryer, cook the chicken mixture in a couple batches.
Storing Directions
These make a great meal if you are trying to meal prep. However, never store constructed fajitas as the filling will make the tortilla soggy.
- Store: Place your fajita mixture in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for up to 3 days and store your flour tortillas in their packaging at room temperature.
- Reheat: Place the meat and veggies in a saucepan, add a bit of water, and heat over medium heat until heated through. Warm up the tortillas in a pan and fill them with the fajita mixture.
