Ingredients
This sweet potato side dish recipe only uses a few simple ingredients that you can find easily at your local grocery store. They’re so simple, in fact, that you might have most of them in your pantry already.
- Mashed sweet potatoes: We use fresh sweet potatoes and roast them before mashing them to make the casserole. While it takes more time, baking the potatoes sweetens them better than other cooking methods.
- Sugar: Granulated sugar sweetens the sweet potato mixture while brown sugar adds more complex flavors to the casserole topping.
- Butter, salt, and vanilla extract: Mixed into the sweet potatoes giving them more flavor. The butter adds richness, the vanilla extra enhances the natural sweetness and gives it some warmth, while the salt brings everything together.
- Large eggs: Makes our old-fashioned sweet potato casserole light and fluffy.
- All-purpose flour: Gives structure to the pecan crust topping!
- Chopped pecans: The classic nut for this Ruth Chris-style casserole but feel free to use walnuts or almonds instead.

How to Make Ruth Chris Sweet Potato Casserole
Making this delicious copycat sweet potato recipe is just as easy, if not easier, than gathering up the ingredients. You’ll be in and out of the kitchen in no time!
- Step 1: Bake the Sweet Potatoes. Wrap the sweet potatoes in foil and bake at 350 degrees for an hour and 10 minutes or until tender.
- Step 2: Make the Sweet Potato Filling. Once the sweet potatoes cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh and add it to a large bowl. Add the sugar, butter, vanilla, and eggs to the bowl with the sweet potatoes and mash thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into a buttered 3-quart baking dish.
- Step 3: Make the Crust. Stir all the crust ingredients together in a medium bowl. Sprinkle the pecan crumble topping mixture evenly over the top of the sweet potato mixture.
- Step 4: Bake. Bake the dish uncovered at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Then, let it sit for 20 minutes before serving.
Expert Tips
- Let it rest. Always let your casserole sit for about 20 minutes before serving so it can solidify a bit and be the perfect temperature.
- Baking the sweet potatoes. You know the sweet potatoes are done when the skin is darkened and papery. To be double sure your sweet potatoes are done, pierce them with a fork. If the fork goes in with no resistance, your sweet potatoes are nice and soft.
- Mix while hot. Make the sweet potato filling while the potatoes are still as hot as possible. They mix so much better that way.
