  • Crispy, Not Greasy: Thanks to the air fryer, you get all the crunch without the oily mess. The tortillas crisp up in minutes while locking in all the seasoned beef and toppings.
  • Customizable for the Family: Everyone can build their own! Load them up with your family’s favorite fillings—cheese, beans, salsa, or even leftover veggies—for a taco night that works for all taste buds.

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef: The main protein in these air fry tacos, bringing juicy, savory flavor to every bite. Want a lighter or vegetarian option? Swap in ground turkey, shredded chicken, pulled pork, or seasoned black beans.
  • Onion: Adds sweetness and a subtle caramelized flavor that enhances the beef mixture.
  • Jalapeños: Bring a punch of heat and smokiness. For a milder taco, simply leave them out or replace with diced bell peppers.
  • Flour Tortillas: Taquito-size tortillas act as the crispy, handheld shell that holds all the delicious filling together. Their smaller size makes them perfect for quick air frying and easy serving.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

Variations

  • Make Them for Breakfast: Swap the ground beef for scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, and cheese for a crispy, air-fried breakfast taco you can take on the go.
  • Pocket-Style Tacos: Use larger tortillas and fold them envelope-style around the filling. Air fry seam-side down for a sealed, handheld version that’s perfect for dipping.
  • Extra Cheesy: Mix in shredded Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, or Sharp Cheddar for a gooey, melty upgrade to your air fried tacos.

How to Make Tacos in the Air Fryer

Making this air fryer taco recipe is incredibly simple—just as easy as your usual taco routine, only faster and crispier thanks to the air fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 390°F for 3 minutes, grab a metal taco holder, cast iron skillet or frying pan, and let’s get cooking!

  • Step 1: Sear the Filling. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onions, and jalapeños over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are soft and translucent. Then, stir in the garlic and cook for another 1–2 minutes, drain the grease, and return the mixture to the pan.
  • Step 2: Season and Simmer. Add the taco seasoning and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  • Step 3: Build and Fry. Place tortillas into a taco holder and fill each with the seasoned meat mixture. Lightly spray both sides of the tortillas with non-stick cooking spray. Air fry at 390°F for 4 minutes, or until crispy.
  • Step 4: Top and Serve. Remove from the air fryer and top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, avocado salsa, cheese, cilantro, or your favorite taco toppings. Serve warm and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Taco Holder Must-Have: A metal taco holder is essential for keeping the tortillas upright and the filling in place while they crisp up—don’t skip it!
  • Crispy Shell Secret: Lightly spray both sides of the tortillas with nonstick cooking spray. It’s the key to getting that golden, crunchy shell.
  • Preheat Your Air Fryer: Always preheat the air fryer for even cooking. Despite the myth, it does make a difference.
  • Storing: Store leftover air fryer taco meat and toppings separately in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze the taco meat in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. To reheat, warm it in a saucepan over medium-low heat until hot, then build your tacos as usual.

Recipe FAQs

Can you make these tacos in the oven instead?

Yes! Spray the tacos the same way and place them in a taco holder. Then, bake in a preheated oven at 400°F for about 4 minutes, or until crispy.

Can I add toppings to the tacos before air frying them?

No—only add the meat mixture before air frying. Adding toppings before cooking can create a mess and lead to soggy or overcooked results. Save the toppings for after!

Can I make these air fryer crispy tacos with corn tortillas?

Yes! If using corn tortillas, warm them first in the microwave or in a dry skillet to prevent cracking in the air fryer. Heating them makes them more pliable and easier to fold.
