I know all of you have probably had salsa at some point. That tomato, onion, garlic, and jalapeno combination is a classic that we’ve all had at parties, Mexican restaurants, or with our meals at home. But have you ever had jalapeno salsa? If you haven’t you’re missing out. It’s super zesty and spicy, and it packs a punch of flavor in heat in equal amounts.

This recipe comes from our friend, Ruth. She brought over some dried epazote and showed us how to make this delicious salsa. It’s great on everything from tacos, burritos, nachos to burgers, chicken, and even pulled pork! Now we keep a jar in the refrigerator at all times because you put it on everything. It’s so good that it can be paired with almost anything.

Jalapeno Salsa

This delicious salsa starts with, you guessed it, jalapenos. I combine them with browned garlic, a Mexican herb called azote, vegetable oil, and salt. It’s an incredibly simple recipe that can add so much flavor and excitement to your dishes. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is all there is to the recipe. It absolutely could not be easier, but it makes a surprisingly, big change in almost any of your favorite recipes.

Why You’ll Love This Jalapeno Salsa

  • It only takes a few simple ingredients to make.
  • It’s a delicious salsa that’s perfect with tortilla chips or your favorite Mexican dish.
  • It’s SO easy to make.

Tips

  • When browning the garlic, don’t go overboard. You want it just golden. Any darker, and it will be bitter.
  • It’s important to blend this salsa until smooth. It’s not meant to be chunky.

Variations

  • For a milder version, remove the seeds from the jalapenos.
  • For deeper flavor, roast the jalapenos before making the salsa.
  • If you can’t find epazote, try using cilantro, papalo, summer savory, or fennel

Recipe FAQ

Where did salsa originate?

Salsa can be traced back to ancient Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans. They created their own versions of salsa using tomatoes, chilies, and squash seeds. It was “officially discovered” by Conquistadors in the 1500s.

What can I do with lots of jalapenos?

You can make all kinds of dishes with jalapenos. Of course, this creamy jalapeno salsa should be first on your list. However, you can also use them in:

  • Cornbread
  • Jalapeno poppers
  • Chicken, beef, and pork recipes
  • Tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, and more
  • Barbecue sandwiches
  • Pasta salads
  • Almost any recipe to which you want to add a kick of heat

Do you take seeds out of jalapenos for salsa?

It’s optional. The seeds are the hottest part, so if you love spicy food, leave the seeds in. Remove them for milder salsa.

How long will jalapeno salsa last in the fridge?

This salsa will keep in a tightly closed container for about 10 days.

Can you freeze fresh jalapeno salsa?

Absolutely. Freeze it for up to 3 months in a heavy-duty freezer bag.

How to Store Jalapeno Salsa

Store this salsa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. For longer storage, freeze it for up to 3 months in a heavy-duty freezer bag.
