How to Make Baked Lemon Pepper Chicken Strips

Making these chicken strips is a straightforward affair that only takes a few minutes and a few simple steps. Even beginners can make this recipe with no trouble whatsoever.

Step 1: Prep

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with foil. Spray the foil with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

Step 2: Season the Chicken

Pat the chicken strips dry with paper towels and add them to a large mixing bowl. Toss with oil, garlic salt, and pepper to coat.

Step 3: Bake

Place the chicken on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the internal temperature registers 165 degrees, flipping halfway through cooking.

Step 4: Brush and Broil

Mix the melted butter, lemon pepper seasoning, lemon juice, and lemon zest in a small mixing bowl. Then, brush it on the baked chicken strips and place them under the broiler. Broil until browned but not burned. Enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Use tongs to easily flip and move the chicken breasts around in the bowl until fully coated with the seasoned oil mixture.
  • Don’t rinse your chicken. Research has shown that it actually causes more bacteria to fly around your kitchen, and it makes it harder to dry the chicken before seasoning it.
  • Always pat your chicken dry before adding it to the oil mixture. This helps the seasoned oil cling to the chicken.
  • Keep a close eye on your chicken while broiling it. It’s very easy to go from browned to burned if you aren’t careful.

Variations

  • You can make this recipe with beef, pork, or seafood.
  • Chicken thighs work well for this dish, as well.
  • Add a kick of extra heat with red pepper flakes or some cayenne pepper.
  • Try grilling these chicken strips. They’re delicious!

Recipe FAQ

How to bake lemon pepper chicken?

Always bake your chicken at a high temperature. Baking your chicken at around 400 degrees, cooks it quickly, avoiding dry, rubbery chicken. Be sure to remove it as soon as the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees so you don’t overcook it!

What is lemon pepper seasoning?

Lemon pepper seasoning is a spice blend made with dried, granulated lemon juice and black pepper.

Can I use lemon juice and pepper instead of lemon pepper seasoning?

Absolutely! Lemon pepper seasoning is just granulated lemon juice and black pepper, so using lemon juice and black pepper will give you the same flavor profile.

Should you put lemon on chicken before or after cooking?

That’s a matter of personal choice, as both options work well in different scenarios. If you want to tenderize your chicken, add the lemon juice first and let the chicken marinade in it for about an hour. If you just want the flavor, you can squeeze lemon juice on your chicken after cooking it.

Can I use chicken thighs?

Chicken thighs will work well in this recipe. The lemon pepper flavor adds a complexity to the rich flavor of the dark meat of the thigh.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Baked Lemon Pepper Chicken Strips

Refrigerate these chicken strips for up to 3 days in an airtight container. For longer storage, wrap the chicken strips in plastic wrap, place them in an airtight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag, and freeze them for up to 3 months.

To reheat the chicken, place the strips in a covered baking dish with just a little water. Bake at 350 degrees until heated through.
