Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

These delicious cheesy asparagus and prosciutto crescent rolls are the perfect appetizer recipe that is packed with tender asparagus spears, prosciutto, and cheese then wrapped in crescents and baked until golden brown.

Three crescent rolls filled with prosciutto, asparagus, and gouda cheese, stacked up on a white plate.

I’m a big fan of appetizers. In fact, I’m known as the appetizer queen when it comes to parties, potlucks, and holiday gatherings. I’ll also bring desserts or main courses, but I really love arriving with a huge tray of finger foods. And when I’m feeling extra fancy or I’m headed to an extra special party, I’ll whip up these delicious crescent rolls stuffed with asparagus, prosciutto, and cheese. They’re absolutely delicious, they look incredibly high-class, and they’re so, so easy to make. It’s the perfect combo!

Prosciutto Crescent Rolls

These delicious crescents take appetizers to another level – a classier level. A level that’s perfect for spring brunch, baby showers, upscale parties, a side dish, or a nice holiday gathering like Easter or for mother’s day. Then again, they’re also easy enough to serve pretty much anytime you feel like it. So basically, there’s no wrong time to make these.

Every bite of these crescent rolls is full of flavor. A golden, flaky crescent roll surrounded tender asparagus, salty prosciutto, and melty gouda. All of these flavors come together to create an elegant appetizer that is absolutely delicious, no matter the occasion. Whenever you make these, I guarantee, you’ll never have to worry about leftovers.

Easy Asparagus Appetizer

My favorite thing about this recipe is how easy it is even though it looks so darn fancy. The way the asparagus sticks out of the crescent rolls and the way the gouda just melts all over makes these look like something straight out of a restaurant, but making them feels like whipping up afternoon snacks for the kids. If that isn’t the best combination of flavor and ease, then I don’t know what is!

Variations

This recipe is absolutely delicious just as it is, but if you want to switch things up, it’s easy to do. All you need to do is tweak one or two things, and you can turn this single recipe into several!

  • Use your favorite cheese in this recipe. Any cheese is good cheese, in my book. Mozzarella, parmesan cheese, etc.
  • Try different types of ham.
  • Add bacon instead.
  • Use puff pastry sheets instead of crescent rolls for a different flavor and texture.
  • Add diced jalapenos for some heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions about this recipe then read on. The following FAQ answers the most commonly asked questions about this recipe.

What is prosciutto?

It is a salted, dry-cured Italian ham. In fact, prosciutto is the Italian word for ham.

What can I substitute for prosciutto?

Prosciutto is an Italian ham, so immediately, any kind of quality ham comes to mind. Great substitutes include:

  • Jamon Serrano
  • Ham
  • Culatello
  • Pancetta
  • Bacon
  • Beef Bresaola

Do you have to wash asparagus before cooking?

Yes! Always wash all your produce, whether you intend to eat it raw or cook it. High temperatures may kill bacteria, but they don’t do anything about any pesticides or animal waste that might be on the produce. Never use produce without washing it.

Can I use frozen asparagus spears for this recipe?

I don’t recommend it. Frozen asparagus works very well in place of fresh in many cases, but not in this recipe. The best texture comes from using fresh asparagus and the moisture that the frozen asparagus will make won’t work in this recipe.

Can I use different cheeses in this recipe?

You absolutely can! Use your favorite variety of cheese. It will most likely work.

Can you freeze asparagus prosciutto crescent rolls?

Yes, you can. These will keep well in the freeze for about 2 months.

How to Store and Reheat

You can store these crescent roll appetizers in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 2 months. To freeze, chill them completely, then wrap them tightly in cling wrap. Store them in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bags.

To reheat these rolls, wrap them in foil and bake them at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

How to Make Asparagus Prosciutto Crescent Rolls

Making these is a straightforward process. This is a beginner-friendly recipe that will have you in and out of the kitchen in no time.

Step 1: Prep

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. While the oven preheats, wash and dry the asparagus and trim the ends. Then, lay them in a single layer on a baking sheet.

Step 2: Bake the Asparagus

Drizzle the asparagus with olive oil and season with black pepper and garlic salt. Toss to coat the spears evenly. Then, bake them for 5 minutes. Remove them from the oven and set them aside.

Step 3: Assemble the Crescent Rolls

Break the crescent roll dough along the perforated edges. Then, add about a tablespoon of cheese at the wider end of each crescent roll followed by a slice of prosciutto on top of the cheese. Top the ham and cheese with 4 to 5 stalks of asparagus and then another tablespoon of cheese. Roll up the crescent rolls from the wider end first and place them on a prepared baking sheet.

Step 4: Bake

Brush each crescent roll with egg wash and bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
