Fried and battered cheese. Could anything be better? No, not really. That’s probably why snacks like mozzarella sticks are so universally popular. Who can say no to melty cheese coated in a deep-fried outer layer? I’ve always loved fried cheese of any sort, and that’s why I love these mozzarella bites. They’re a slightly different take on the classic idea, and they are so good. I’ve been making this particular recipe for a few months, now, and everyone in my family loves it. When the kids and grandkids are over for a visit, I put out a batch of these. They’re always gone by the time they leave!

Mozzarella Cheese Bites

We all know and love mozzarella sticks. That melty center of mozzarella that’s covered with crunchy breading is one of the most classic appetizers out there. This recipe takes that concept to another level! These bites feature mozzarella cheese that’s been coated in corn dog batter and deep-fried to golden brown perfection. This method makes for a snack that is meltier than mozzarella sticks and with a batter that’s sweeter and more robust, as well. I guarantee it’ll become your new favorite.

Mozzarella Cheese Bites Tips

This is a fairly easy recipe, but there are a couple of tips that are so simple but make such a big difference. Be sure to take a look at them before diving into this recipe.

  • Keep the oil at 375 degrees. Any higher, and the corn dog batter will cook to golden brown but the cheese won’t have time to melt through.
  • Dry off your cheese before cubing it so the batter will stick.
  • Be sure that you don’t crowd the pan. You want your oil to stay at an even temperature.

Thanks to the popularity of mozzarella sticks, you might assume that fried cheese is either an Italian invention or something dreamed up at a sports bar. In reality, fried cheese has its roots in France. in 1393, a recipe for fried cheese using muenster was published in a cookbook called Le Managier de Paris.

Yes, but I don’t recommend it. It can cause that creamy texture to turn into one that’s crumbly and odd-feeling in the mouth.
