Ingredients
You’ll only need a handful of ingredients to make this holiday toffee recipe. Most or all of them are probably in your kitchen right now.
- Butter: For that buttery flavor for the crunchy layer of your toffee Christmas bark.
- Sugar: Regular granulated sugar melts to make everything perfectly sweet.
- Light corn syrup: Works with the sugar to sweeten but also contributes to a smooth and glossy texture.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Gives the chocolate layer the perfect balance between bitter and sweet. If you prefer it a bit less sweet swap them for dark chocolate chips or for a sweeter option, use milk chocolate chips.
- Holiday sprinkles: To give your toffee bark that festive feel.
For the full list of ingredients and the amounts you need of each, check the recipe card further down the page.

Variations
- Swap the Chocolate: Use white chocolate or peanut butter chips in place of the chocolate for a different flavor and look. You can also mix and match. Add a drizzle of white chocolate or peanut butter over the top of the regular chocolate before adding your sprinkles.
- Make Old-fashioned Toffee: For a more traditional look you can skip the sprinkles altogether or swap them for some chopped almonds.
- Experiment With Different Toppings: Try it with some holiday M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces, halved mini Reese’s Cups, mini Cadbury Eggs, different sprinkles, crushed or chopped pretzels, and chopped nuts as well.
How to Make Christmas Toffee
As long as you have a candy thermometer, this butter toffee recipe is a breeze. It only takes a few simple steps to make!
- Step 1: Prep. Line a 9×9 baking dish, or small baking sheet, with aluminum foil, extending the foil over the edges of your chosen dish. Set it aside.
- Step 2: Make the Toffee. Melt the butter over medium heat in a 2-quart saucepan. Then, add the sugar, water, and corn syrup. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue stirring and reduce the heat to medium-low, cooking until the mixture reaches 290 degrees.
- Step 3: Pour the Toffee. As soon as it reaches temperature, immediately pour the mixture into your prepared dish and quickly spread it into an even layer with a spatula.
- Step 4: Top with Chocolate. Let the toffee sit for a couple of minutes, then sprinkle the chocolate chips all over the top. Let them sit until slightly melted, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee with a spatula.
- Step 5: Decorate and Chill. Sprinkle the Christmas toffee evenly with holiday sprinkles before the chocolate sets. Then chill the toffee for 20 minutes in the refrigerator until firm. Remove the hardened toffee from the container using the foil and break it into pieces. Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Work Quickly. Spread the toffee quickly while it’s still warm. This makes it more even as it dries.
- Use a Candy Thermometer. Invest in a candy thermometer for this toffee candy recipe and many other boiled sugar recipes. It’s the only way to truly know if your mixture is ready.
- Store Tips. Place the Christmas toffee bark in an airtight container and store it at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Never refrigerate your toffee. The moisture in the fridge will make it soft.
Recipe FAQ
Yes you can! You can freeze it for up to 3 months in an airtight, freezer-safe container with the layers separated by wax paper. Thaw it out at room temperature for a few hours before you plan to enjoy it.
This usually happens because the caramel layer cools too much before you add the chocolate layer. My method solves this issue because you directly add the chocolate chips while the toffee layer is still warm so the chocolate melts from the residual heat. As soon as the chocolate is spreadable be sure to even it out.
