Bananas Foster Bread Pudding

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video

This Bananas Foster bread pudding is a rich and comforting dessert that takes the classic bread pudding and elevates it with the rich, caramelized flavors of Bananas Foster. It starts out with fluffy bread cubes that are soaked in a creamy custard that is baked, and then topped with bananas and a warm rum sauce. The flavor combination is simply irresistible.

One of the best things about bread pudding is how incredibly versatile it is. It’s so easy to adjust the ingredients to create all kinds of amazing flavors and textures. The great thing about Bananas Foster is just how crazy good it is. Rich, caramelized brown sugar flavor combined with rum, nutmeg, cloves, and sliced bananas creates a delicious taste of the tropics in every bite. I combined these two amazing desserts into one with this Bananas Foster bread pudding. It combines the rich custard texture and flavor of bread pudding with the deeply caramelized tropical flavor of Bananas Foster into a dessert that looks and feels so fancy but it actually very simple to make!

Bananas Foster Bread Pudding

This dessert starts with cubes of thick-cut Texas toast soaked in classic bread pudding custard. I bake the bread pudding for about an hour until it’s fully baked. Then, I make a delicious, creamy Bananas Foster sauce loaded with sliced bananas, rum, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. I top the bread pudding with the sauce, and all that’s left to do is watch it disappear. I love this recipe because it’s so simple, but it looks so fancy. It’s perfect for weeknight desserts or parties!

How to Make Bananas Foster Bread Pudding

Making this pudding is as easy as the ingredient list. Bread pudding is a universally easy dish to make, and the Bananas Foster sauce is just as easy. The entire recipe only takes basic cooking skills and about an hour from start to finish.

Step 1: Prep

Let the bread cubes sit out for at least an hour to get stale.

Step 2: Make the Custard

Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla together in a large bowl.

Step 3: Soak the Bread

Add the bread cubes and stir to coat. Then, chill for about an hour.

Step 4: Bake

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray while the bread soaks. Then, pour the bread and any excess custard mix into the baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Seet aside while making the sauce.

Step 5: Make the Sauce

Melt butter in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Then, add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the heavy cream and stir well until combined. Then, stir in the bananas and rum extract and cook until everything is heated through.

Step 6: Serve

Pour the sauce over the warm bread pudding and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Use hearty bread, such as Texas toast or challah, that will withstand the soaking process without falling apart.
  • Leave the cubed bread out for at least an hour to get stale. Overnight works even better!
  • Stir constantly while cooking the Bananas Foster sauce to prevent scorching.

Variations

  • You can use Texas toast, challah, thick-sliced brioche, or any hearty, mildly-flavored bread for bread pudding.
  • Try adding chopped pecans or walnuts for more flavor and texture.
  • You can use milk in place of heavy cream if you don’t have any. Be aware that the sauce will be thinner but still delicious!

What to Serve with Bread Pudding

This delicious dessert is perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. You can also pair it with some fresh fruit, chocolate, or a dollop of whipped cream on top.
