Crescent Roll Breakfast with Bacon, Egg and Cheese

There are lots of ways you might like to do breakfast in the morning. Usually, there are two types of popular breakfasts, there is the grain-heavy cereal or oatmeal breakfast option that may be enough to satisfy some. In the grain category, you may opt for something more filling, like a stack of pancakes, or something more portable like a grab-and-go pastry. Others, like myself, prefer a more protein-laden breakfast. This can come in the form of a platter with eggs and bacon or sausage, or a portable sandwich. The sandwich option provides everything you need for a quick dose of carbs and protein all in one take. These crescent roll breakfast pastries combine all the benefits of a protein-packed sandwich and an easy to carry breakfast roll with all the good stuff baked inside.

Breakfast Crescent Rolls

Breakfast crescent rolls are simply crescent rolls used for breakfast. You may have repurposed these before to make pigs in a blanket. It’s easy to do the same thing with a breakfast sausage. You may have even cut a crescent roll in half to make just the kind of breakfast sandwich I mentioned earlier. These crescent roll breakfast pastries just have more of a bao-inspired orientation where they are filled rather than layered into a sandwich. One fantastic thing about a crescent roll breakfast like this is that all you need to bring out that amazing flavor is a little bit of salt and pepper. No crazy ingredients!

Why You’ll Love This Crescent Roll Breakfast Recipe

One of my favorite things about these stuffed crescent roll breakfast pastries is how easy they are to make and to store for later. They use only a handful of ingredients and they are a perfect go to quick bite at any hour of the morning.

Crescents are among the best breakfast pastries you could ask for and the composition of these filled crescent rolls beats out even the most prominent of competitors. Crescent rolls are flakey soft and delicate.

The finished combination of these traditional breakfast proteins with the slightest seasoning to bring out their flavor and the soft flaky golden brown crescent roll is a no brainer. You’ll want to have a few of these waiting in the refrigerator each morning.

Tips and Variations

This is a simple and tasty recipe, but it’s also really easy to make substitutions, alterations and embellishments to push it over the top. Here are some of my favorite suggestions for a twist on a basic crescent roll breakfast.

Sausage

One of my favorite ways to change up this recipe is to add sausage instead of bacon. The sausage is juicier and it adds more spice without adding other ingredients to the mix. For a leaner breakfast you can use turkey sausage. You can also enhance the taste of your crescent roll breakfast by using maple flavored sausage, applewood smoked chicken sausage, or a heartier smoked or spicy sausage like andouille.

Ham

Another wonderful alternative to bacon is ham. Use a honey roasted ham to add sweetness to the salty flavor.

Veggies

Another popular alternative to bacon is veggies instead of meat. The eggs will bring almost any herb or vegetable together in the mixture. Whatever you like in an omelet, will be terrific in a crescent. Try spinach, bell peppers, olives, mushrooms, sauteed or green onions, even avocado. It’s all permissible!

Different Cheese

One detail you don’t want to overlook is the cheese. I default to sharp cheddar for almost every recipe, but you can always switch things up a bit by using a spicy pepper jack, or a tangy gorgonzola, creamy havarti or muenster give it a nice texture, and swiss cheese will go especially well with a ham substitute. For an even better flavor enhancement try some smoked cheddar or gouda. For a taste of something Mediterranean, try feta, or goat cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes. You can make big batches of this crescent roll breakfast in advance and choose to freeze them or keep them throughout the week in your refrigerator. For best results thaw out your crescents in the refrigerator for 24 hours before you reheat in a microwave.

Can crescent rolls be frozen?

Yes. Crescent rolls can be frozen. See How to Store below for details on how to keep crescents in the freezer and how to reheat.

Should I use an Egg Wash?

You may want to preserve a small remnant of your eggs and beat them with some milk or cream. This will make a wash to brush on your crescents after you have rolled them into shape around the egg mixture. This gives a shiny, polished-looking crust to the rolls that tastes more lavish than ordinary crescents.

How to Store and Reheat

Crescent Roll Breakfast can be frozen as long as you keep each roll separated and locked in an airtight container with space around them for air to circulate. When reheating from frozen, double the cooking time from refrigerated. Usually about 90 seconds in the microwave.

What to Serve with this Crescent Roll Breakfast Recipe

This stuffed breakfast pastry makes a terrific grab-and-go option, but it’s also a good dish to add some fruit to. A side of fresh apples, oranges or pears makes a great addition to your meal and helps to balance things out. Your choice of fruit may depend on your choice of meat or cheese. Pear with brie, for example, makes a winning combination.
