Steak, potatoes, corn on the slices of cob on a white plate.

Steak and potatoes is such a classic dish, and it’s one that I’ve been making for years. There’s nothing better than juicy, tender steak, potatoes, and corn on the cob. Just thinking about it brings back memories of my childhood. When I was a kid, a dinner like this was reserved for special occasions, and it just seemed to taste extra special, too. When I became a mom, I would make steak and potatoes to mark special occasions, as well.

Steak and Potato Foil Packs

Now the kids are all grown up, I tend to make this recipe a lot for our weekend dinners that we still love to have. Again, it’s a delicious dish that I reserve for special occasions, even though it’s incredibly simple to make. It doesn’t take much time at all, which means I get a recipe fit for a special occasion, and I actually get to enjoy that special occasion with my family rather than being stuck in the kitchen.

These foil packs are so delicious and so easy to make. Tender, perfectly seasoned sirloin steak, baby Yukon potatoes, and mini corn on the cob are all cooked together to perfection inside a foil packet. From there, it’s an easy matter of opening them up and placing the contents on a plate. You end up with steak that is perfectly cooked every time, and potatoes and corn that are both cooked to tender but firm perfection.

Tips and Variations

Although this recipe is incredibly simple, I do have some tips here that will help you make it the best that it can possibly be. I also have some great variations to ensure that you make the perfect dish for you and your family every time.

Tips

  • Cut your meat and potatoes into 1-inch pieces to ensure they cook evenly.
  • Always be sure your packs are completely sealed to lock in the steam and moisture.
  • Always use heavy-duty aluminum foil when making your packets. They’ll stand up to the heat and folding so you don’t have to worry about them falling apart.

Variations

  • Add any of your favorite vegetables to foil packs.
  • Use any of your favorite potatoes from Yukon Gold – my favorite – to russet, red, and any other variety you love.
  • You can make these packs using steak, chicken, pork, or even shrimp.

Steak and Potatoes Foil Pack FAQ

If you have questions about this steak and potatoes foil pack recipe, then read on. The following FAQ answers the most frequently asked questions about this recipe.

Why cook steak in foil packs?

Cooking steak – or any meat, for that matter – in foil packs ensures that the meat is evenly cooked and juicy thanks to the steam that gets locked inside. In addition, it makes cleanup a breeze.

What is the best steak to use in foil packs?

Cuts of steak like top sirloin, ribeye, and porterhouse are all great in foil packs.

What do you put in a foil dinner?

Generally speaking, you can put anything in a foil dinner pack. Popular choices include beef, pork, and chicken, along with classic veggies like carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, corn, green beans, and the like.

What kind of aluminum foil should be used for foil packs?

You should only use heavy-duty aluminum foil when cooking with foil packs. Heavy-duty foil is less likely to rip under the weight of the food, and it protects the food from burning.

Can you prepare foil packs in advance?

Absolutely. Simply place your prepared ingredients into the packs and then cook them up later in the day or even the next day.
