Apple Filling
In a saucepan over medium heat, add apples, sugar, water, cinnamon, and allspice.
In a small bowl, stir vanilla and cornstarch together, and add to the apple mixture.
Stir and bring to a boil until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.
Streusel
In a small bowl, whisk brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon together. Using two forks or a pastry blender, cut butter into mixture until crumbly. Set aside.
Crescent Dough
On a lightly floured surface, lay out crescent dough, one can at a time, and pinch the perforated lines together.
Roll dough so edges are even.
Carefully slice into 1-inch strips lengthwise and then cut each strip in half. (Should have 12 pieces of dough from each can of crescent rolls)
Add some apple mixture down the center of one strip and sprinkle streusel over the top of the apple filling.
Place another strip of dough on top of the streusel.
Gently twist the two strips together and lay on the prepared baking sheet.
Repeat with the remaining strips.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden, and remove from the oven and let cool.
Tips
- Mix the vanilla and cornstarch before adding them to the apple filling to create a slurry.
- Cook your filling over medium heat, stirring constantly, to avoid scorching.
- Line your baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
- It's important to fully cool your twists before applying the glaze. If the twists are warm, the glaze will simply slide off of them.
