Homemade Hamburger Buns Recipe

If you want to have the best tasting hamburger buns, then you need to make them at home. Making your own bread can be a little intimidating and time consuming, but this recipe is really easy to follow and tastes so much better than anything you can find in the store. This homemade hamburger bun recipe will take your burgers to the next level with an amazing flavor that will leave everyone wanting more.

How to Store Homemade Hamburger Buns

Homemade buns are best when used the same day they are made, but you can keep them for a few days as long as they are stored properly in an airtight container. If you are not going to be able to use all of the rolls within 2 or 3 days, it is best if they are stored in a freezer bag to keep them from going stale or getting moldy.

If you need to store them for a period of time, wrap rolls individually in plastic wrap and place inside a resealable bag. This will ensure that your homemade burger buns stay fresh until you are ready to use them again.

Do These Rolls Need an Egg Wash

No, these rolls do not use an egg wash. If you wanted to give them an egg wash you can, but it is not needed. If you want to have a golden crust on the outside of the buns you can brush them with a little bit of olive oil and sprinkle with salt before baking them. I recommend brushing the buns with butter when they come out of the oven and are still warm.

Important Tips and Tricks for Making Homemade Rolls

You will need to make sure you use active dry yeast for the homemade hamburger bun recipe, not quick rising or instant yeast. Using instant yeast will result in flat, tasteless buns.

Make sure the yeast is not expired. If the yeast has expired, the bread will not rise. This is very important if you want the homemade hamburger buns to come out perfectly.

Yeast is a live organism, so you want to make sure your water is warm, between 105° and 115°. You do not want it too hot or it will kill the yeast and your dough will not turn out.

Making homemade hamburger buns takes time, you can’t rush through this recipe and skip steps and expect great results. You have to allow time for the yeast to rise and make sure you knead the dough well.

Do not add too much flour while making the dough. If you add too much, it will start to become dry and more difficult to work with. Add the flour slowly until the dough isn’t sticky. The end results should be smooth and elastic dough.

This homemade hamburger bun recipe is very versatile. You can add in other ingredients and make it sweet instead of savory. If you want to keep the hamburger buns savory, I recommend using salt and pepper but for a sweeter bun, try adding in honey or even a few pinches of brown sugar.

How to Make Homemade Hamburger Buns

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 – Prep

Preheat oven to 425° and prepare a baking sheet with a non-stick cooking spray or a sheet of parchment paper and set aside. In a large bowl, or bowl of a stand mixer, stir together yeast, oil, and sugar into warm water. Let bloom and rest for 10 minutes or until the mixture becomes foamy. Whisk egg and salt into the yeast mixture. Slowly add the flour until a smooth, soft dough forms.

Step 2 – Forming Hamburger Buns

Roll dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Let rise for about an hour, or until dough has doubled in size. Transfer dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and all the air is out of the dough. Form dough back into a ball. Using a dough cutter, cut dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each piece of dough into a ball and place the balls onto the baking sheet and let rise until dough balls have doubled in size.

Step 3 – Baking the Hamburger Buns

Place buns in oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the tops of buns are golden brown. Remove buns from oven and brush tops with melted unsalted butter. Place on a wire rack to cool.
